Our apprentices

National Apprenticeship Week takes place this week (5 to 9 March), giving employers and apprentices the opportunity to celebrate the positive impact that apprenticeships have on individuals and businesses. In its 11th year, the theme for this year’s National Apprenticeship Week is showcasing ‘apprenticeships work’.

Huntingdonshire District Council currently has 11 apprentices working in different services across the council. There are many projects that the apprentices are involved in, such as helping to develop the council’s new core values, taking part in #ourday, and helping out at a foodbank. They attend training courses and are involved in various different project and meeting groups in the council. They are also celebrating National Apprenticeship Week by visiting several schools in the district and talking to students about the benefits of apprenticeships and the many opportunities that there are.

Kyle McDonald, an apprentice who works in Operations at the council, said: "So far working in HDC has been great, meeting all the new people and being part of a team full of great people that will help you with any problems and make you feel welcome. I was surprised by all the opportunities that I have been presented with, like training and working with all the different sections within Operations. It has been a great experience so far and I know there is more to come."

Melanie Le-Fort, an apprentice who works in Housing, said: "My life at HDC has been busy, hectic and crazy, but I work in a wonderful team with great people who have all welcomed me and are often showing me they appreciate my hard work. My plans for the future would hopefully be to become a permanent member of admin/support staff in my department and maybe one day train to be a housing officer and help support the clients who come to us with no place to live."

Cheryl Ward, Learning and Development Manager at the council, said: "I am really pleased with the difference our apprentices have made to the organisation. They arrived with an appetite for learning, plenty of enthusiasm and a lot of questions! Their energy has had a positive effect on those around them, and they are regularly used as a ‘sounding board’ for all areas. They have made a big impact in a short space of time."
