Throughout National School Sports Week (20-24 June), over 160 children were out getting active with Huntingdonshire District Council’s One Leisure Active Lifestyles Team as part of the Sport England- funded DASH (Delivering Activity and Sport in Huntingdonshire) Phase II Project.

Ashbeach School, Ramsey had the opportunity to try a U-Canoe session at One Leisure with coaches from the Active Lifestyles team. U-Canoe sessions give young people a chance to try canoeing in a swimming pool environment using inflatable canoes to develop water skills and confidence. Students and staff enjoyed learning new skills, with many trying canoeing for the first time.

Priory Junior School, St Neots got the chance to try out some adaptive sports such as Boccia, indoor kurling, PEDALS (adaptive cycling), and seated volleyball.

Cllr John Palmer, whose executive responsibilities include the One Leisure Active Lifestyles team, said: "The Sports Week provided young people with a great opportunity to try a range of unique activities. It is good to see lots of students taking up this opportunity and enjoying the activities on offer."

Liam Smith, Class Teacher and Sports Coordinator for Priory Junior School said "We were extremely grateful to be asked to be involved with the One Leisure Active Lifestyles team during National Schools Sports Week. The staff ensured the activities ran smoothly and were nothing but professional. The children were thrilled to be able to participate in sports they had otherwise never had the chance to have a go at before. The adaptive cycles were a great hit with staff and children, especially those who are yet unable to ride a bike "

Further related activities also took place throughout June and July. The One Leisure Active Lifestyles team currently offer several activities and opportunities across the district for schools to get involved with.
