What attracted you to HDC?
I joined One Leisure 12 years ago as a lifeguard. Initially, it was a great opportunity to work in an environment where I could interact with people and be part of a team, but it didn't take long to realise there was so much more to it. What really attracted me was being part of a service that has a positive impact on the local community and helps people improve their health and wellbeing.
What do you value most about working here?
For me, it's the culture and the relationships I've built over the years.
I've worked across all of the One Leisure sites and in a number of different roles, which has given me the chance to work with colleagues from right across HDC. One thing that has always stood out is how willing people are to work together, support each other and share ideas. There's a real sense of collaboration and a shared focus on delivering the best possible outcomes for our residents and customers.
What keeps you here?
The variety and the fact that there's always something new to learn.
Over the last 12 years I've had the opportunity to progress from casual lifeguard to Team Leader, Duty Manager, Assistant Manager, Centre Manager and now General Manager. Every role has brought new challenges, different experiences and opportunities to develop.
No two days are the same, and that's something I've always enjoyed. Whether it's working with teams, improving services or tackling new challenges, there's always something different going on.
What advice would you give others who are considering a career at HDC?
Be willing to get stuck in and take opportunities when they come along.
When I started as a casual lifeguard, I never imagined I'd end up as a General Manager 12 years later. I've been lucky enough to work across all of the One Leisure centres, take on a variety of roles and work with some great people across the organisation.
My advice would be to keep an open mind, get involved and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. HDC is a place where people are trusted, supported and encouraged to develop. You never really know where that next opportunity might take you.
