Our collection crews will be working on the following bank holidays – Tuesday 27th December and Monday 2 January.

Please make sure your bins are out by 6.30am on your collection day.

Below are our top tips for reducing your waste during the holidays

  1. If you know that come Christmas day you put everything in a black bag, plan ahead. Make sure you have some clear sacks ready for recyclable packaging.

  2. Make sure all food waste is added to your green bin to be composted. No amount is too small. Have a tub on the side for any food waste to go into (an old Tupperware pot will do and can be washed after it has been emptied).

  3. Plastic ribbons and bows must go in the general waste so use these sparingly, or switch to reusables. Shiny wrapping paper and ones with glitter cannot be recycled. Do the scrunch test. If it springs back it is plastic and is rubbish, if it stays in a ball it is paper and can be recycled.

  4. Flat pack any boxes, even small ones, and this will save extra room in your recycling bins.

  5. Larger boxes, can be left flat packed alongside your recycling bin on collection day.

  6. If your recycling bin is full, remember you can place additional recycling in clear sacks.

  7. Ensure all your guests know what goes into which bin. A list can be found on the What Goes in Which Bin page.

  8. If you have a real Christmas tree, this can be placed by the side of your green bin for composting. If your tree is bigger than your bin, please chop it in half.

Executive Councillor for Operations, Cllr Simone Taylor, said: "Our residents have helped to divert almost 60% of waste from landfill through the kerbside collections. We want to thank you for your continued support with recycling and waste collections in Huntingdonshire. We hope all of our residents have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."
