Huntingdonshire District Council has succeeded in the prosecution of Shezan Gul Nawaz, sole director of Somersham Curry & Kebab Ltd, for serious food hygiene violations.

Mr. Nawaz was fined £6,218 after pleading guilty to 15 offences at Cambridge Magistrates Court on 19 September 2024.

The offences, which included unsafe food storage, poor cleanliness in food preparation areas and allowing a lavatory to open into a food storeroom, were uncovered during an inspection by a council Environmental Health Officer in August 2023. The inspection was carried out after a complaint was received about the poor hygiene standards at the premises, which was found to be justified.

Cllr Stephen Ferguson, Executive Councillor for Resident Services and Corporate Performance, stated:  "The council is committed to protecting public health. Food businesses are legally required to uphold basic hygiene and safety standards to ensure their customers’ safety. Our Environmental Health team works diligently to support businesses with advice and inspections to help them meet these obligations."

The Environmental Health team regularly inspects food businesses to ensure compliance with hygiene standards and investigates complaints regarding cleanliness.
